SMOKE IN THE KITCHEN - AWARD-WINNING NOVEL

The Story Behind the Novel

EXPLORE MORE FROM SMOKE IN THE KITCHEN

Smoke in the Kitchen is a powerful novel about second chances. Set in Freetown, Sierra Leone, it follows forty-three-year-old Sara Moses, a woman shaped by loss, tradition, and an unyielding spirit. After the devastating death of her fiancé and unborn child, Sara’s life feels emptied of purpose. Encouraged by her sister, she begins again, marrying Benjamin Moses, a government official, and daring to hope for the family she longs to build.

But Sara’s journey is not simple. She wrestles with grief, infertility, family legacy disputes, and the tension between modern progress and cultural heritage. Her beloved outdoor kitchen, where meals are prepared over firewood, becomes more than a place to cook. It represents memory, identity, and generational wisdom passed down from her grandmother.

As Sara fights to adopt two children and protect her inherited family business, she channels her determination into founding a nationwide Reforestation Association. Her mission calls citizens from every walk of life to action, urging them to “plant, plant, plant” and restore what has been depleted. In doing so, she offers a second chance not only to herself and two innocent children, but to an entire nation’s future.

Beginning in Sierra Leone in 1983, the novel introduces Sara as a woman of fortitude, determined to prevail over personal, familial, and societal challenges. Through her, the story explores themes of hope, environmental stewardship, women’s empowerment, faith, and the enduring strength of community.

At its heart, Smoke in the Kitchen is about what rises after devastation. Like smoke curling upward from a cooking fire, hope lingers, reshapes, and refuses to disappear.

MAJOR THEMES PORTRAYED IN THE BOOK

Smoke in the Kitchen by Gloria S. N. Allen, an award-recognized novel about love, loss, resilience, and second chances.

Second Chances & Renewal

This is the spine of the book.

Sara’s life does not move in a straight line. Loss, grief, and disappointment interrupt her path, yet she is given space to begin again.

  • Second chances in love

  • Second chances in motherhood

  • Second chances in purpose

  • Second chances for nature itself through reforestation

Nothing is restored exactly as it was. What returns is transformed, not replaced.

Emotional scene of Sara recalling her late fiancé and unborn daughter.

Faith, Purpose & Quiet Hope

Faith is present, but not overstated.

  • Hope arrives slowly

  • Purpose is discovered, not announced

  • Meaning is found through action, not miracles

Sara’s purpose emerges when she stops waiting for life to return what was lost and begins giving life forward.

Set in Sierra Leone, February 1983, introducing Sara Moses and her kitchen.

Home, Domestic Spaces & the Symbolism of the Kitchen

The kitchen is more than a place.

  • It is memory

  • It is routine

  • It is where grief lingers and healing begins

Smoke becomes a metaphor:

  • For pain that rises

  • For endurance

  • For transformation through fire

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

Very interesting story with real characters. I couldn't help to feel for Sara Moses' dealings with the in-laws. Even though I've finished reading the book, I often find myself thinking about Sara's character, especially her determination to tackle the adoption issues. Might make a good drama/movie.
